Trilha da Pedra da Gávea

Despite the tiring path through the Woods, passing by a few places where the ascent of the stones is quite difficult, the feeling of arriving at the top of the Pedra da Gávea is unforgettable and worth any effort.

At the top of the Pedra da Gávea, which is 844 meters above sea level, one can admire the city of Rio de Janeiro from a privileged point of view, which most people don't know.

The scenery is spectacular and includes the Parque Nacional da Tijuca forest (with the Corcovado and the Pedra Bonita), the Morro Dois Irmãos, the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, the beaches of São Conrado, Ipanema, Leblon and Barra da Tijuca; and even the city of Niterói, on the other side of Guanabara Bay.

Trilha da Pedra da Gávea
Pedra da Gávea There are three different trails for the stone: the first starts in the Estrada das Canoas, in São Conrado; another begins in Pedra Bonita; and the third, which is the most used in Barrinha (Barra da Tijuca). The latter was chosen to be described in this roadmap. It is a journey of 1.67 km.
Condominium The main access to the trail is at the end of the road of Sorimã, in Barra da Tijuca. At some point, it is necessary to go through the gate of a condominium. The path continues through a dirt road, until you reach a little square, where you can park the car.
The beginning of the trail is marked by a totem, beside the house number 936.
The Trail The trail can be traversed in one morning — it takes two to four hours, from the beginning up to the top; and, of course, twice as long for the outward and return journey. Should only be done by people in good physical shape, preferably with some experience in this type of climb or with adequate safety equipment, because it is a tiring climb and, in some places, quite difficult and dangerous — is an escalation of the first degree.
The Path At the beginning, the climb has a gentle slope and passes through the forest, in the shade of the trees, which ensures a pleasant and easy walk. In the second half of the way, the difficulty increases: the ascent becomes steeper and the sandy ground facilitates slips and falls.
Sorimã falls The small waterfall located in the middle of the track is the perfect place to take a few minutes of rest and cool off in the hottest days.
Ascent The trail becomes steeper. In about 50 minutes, reaches a place where you must use both hands to climb, with the help of roots and trunks. Then there is a slippery stone slab, where are fixed some iron rungs and a steel cable to facilitate the ascent.
Pedra do Navio Continuing, you arrive to the place where there is an interesting Rocky structure forming a cave. Pedra do Navio, as it is called. From this place, one can see the whole neighborhood of Barra da Tijuca, beleza pura!
Praça da Bandeira Then, in a few minutes the trail arrives at a location where the ground is bare and flat, called Praça da Bandeira. It is here that meet the 3 trails that lead to the Pedra da Gávea; henceforth, the path is only one.
Mirante From Praça da Bandeira, the trail already has no canopy protection. Henceforth, the ground is bare. In a few minutes, the trail comes to a lookout, which is well in front of the Head of the emperor. From there, one can see the Morro Dois Irmãos, the entire Barra da Tijuca, the Pedra Bonita, the Tijuca Peak, the Hill of Taquara and, at a distance, the sugar loaf.
Carrasqueira Located at the end of the trail and considered the most difficult, the Carrasqueira is a large stone wall, approximately 30 metres in height. The ascent of Carrasqueira requires attention and physical preparation, since it is necessary to make a cast of first grade. This climb is considered easy, but allows no error. Here, the smallest error is fatal: below, there is a cliff, and only a narrow trail that can stop the fall — or not.
Security In Carrasqueira, is recommended to use ropes and appropriate safety equipment. There is a support attached to the top of the stone, which serves to tie a rope to assist visitors in ascent. Happens, however, that sometimes the rope is there ... and sometimes it is not! Then, the visitor should not rely on it.
Portal da Gávea After the Carrasqueira, the trail continues climbing until you reach the Portal da Gávea, a structure that resembles a portal, formed by two stones of 15 meters tall, 7 m wide and 2 meters deep. The Pedra da Gávea is located northeast of this point.
A legend says that this portal connects the Pedra da Gávea to other dimensions and other sacred places such as Machu Picchu.
Top The final part of the trail passes through the Atlantic forest, under the trees. Topping, there are two possible paths: the path to the right leads to a stone in front of the neighborhood of São Conrado, where you can see a beautiful landscape. The left leads to the highest point of the Pedra da Gávea, called the Emperor's Head because, when seen from afar, the stone resembles the face of the Emperor d. Pedro II.
Arrival at Pedra da Gávea Finished the last climb, the visitor reaches a wide flat area, with a privileged view of the city.
Head of the Emperor To reach the Head of the Emperor, it is necessary to go down a small slope with aid of a steel cable; and then make a short climbing over slippery stone. Now, the trail ended. It was not easy. But, peaking at the top of the head of the Emperor, you feel that your effort was worth it. The feeling is unforgettable!

On the way it is possible to see some bromeliads and orchids, such as Laelia Lobata, which are found only in the Pedra da Gávea. There are also many birds and small animals, such as anthropology and squirrels.

Path of the slaves

The start of the walk is done on the jagged rocks of a small road, built by slaves who worked in ancient farms of the region.

To make the entire trail without much fatigue, it is important to pay attention on the breath: inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

During the whole route, there are markings with yellow arrows painted on trees and rocks, indicating the correct path.

A good tip is to start the journey early in the morning.

Autumn on the river

The river can get even more beautiful in the fall. Few are the people who value the station because here the leaves do not fall from the trees like elsewhere in the world. But the locals more aware do not leave the blue autumn sky's unparalleled go unnoticed. Some days, the city looks like a painting. Bike, hiking, hang gliding or piquiniques, are programs that are even more interesting at this time.
It's sunny but not hot. The Sun makes its part leaving the comfortable temperature so that you can enjoy the day without beg for air conditioning.

Any Other Ideas

Has no way to continue with another tip: the rudder to the Pontal; There, in the world, nothing equal to our beaches. But don't be fooled, spend the entire day in the sand is expensive, so it's always good to follow some advice.

At the end of Arpoador Beach, for example, the Bamboo tent sells coconut for $ 3--are almost $ 2 savings. Also in Arpoador, this time in stone, it is possible to admire one of the most beautiful scenes of the city, the sunset. And, have no excuses: this show is completely free.

As the beaches of Rio asked the globe and matte biscuit gallon, it's always good to have an extra money in the portfolio. It is worth remembering that, generally, Leme and Copacabana have prices slightly cheaper than Ipanema, Leblon and Barra. In either case, the tip is: amount makes a difference. Join the guys for buying everything together and a single seller; is much easier to get a descontinho.

If you are like a Sun on the Recreio Beach still wins the chance to end the day with a delicious reggae. From January, the gang of Reggae in reserve back in full force for another year of great music, sunsets and outdoor event.

Though not (yet) have the best bike trails in the world, ride a bike in Rio de Janeiro is a delightful program and zero cost. To make the ride even more enjoyable, worthwhile include two pit stops : a few minutes to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon and a "dip" in the cold shower of the Paineiras to refresh the body and cleanse the soul.

If you don't have a bike or is in Rio to tourism, it is worth trying the oranges of Bike River.

Another beautiful way to enjoy the city, practice a sport and save the Pocket, is enjoying the day in any of the numerous trails cariocas.
